The Oswego State women's ice hockey team allowed three first period goals and was unable to rally in a 3-2 loss to Potsdam on Sunday afternoon at Maxcy Hall in the latter game of a two-game series.
The Lakers kept the Bears off the scoreboard for the final 40 minutes of the game, but were not able to muster enough offense in the final two periods, as Oswego State falls to 2-4-2 overall and 2-2-2 in ECAC West play.
Potsdam got on the board first at 5:28 of the first period on an unassisted goal by Breanna Roy, who assisted on the game-tying goal with the extra attacker in Saturday's 5-5 tie.
Oswego State answered right back just nine seconds later to tie the game at one. Carly Henderson (So., Markham, Ont.) won the faceoff following Roy's goal and got the puck to Carly Marchment (Fr., Courtice, Ont.), who beat Potsdam goalie Dawna Salvarinas for the Lakers' only goal of the first period.
Tied at one, the Bears tallied the next two goals on the power play to take a 3-1 lead into the first period intermission. Brittany Lucky scored the team's first power-play goal of the game at the tail end of an interference penalty at 14:49 of the first period. Annmarie Lewis was credited with the assist on the play.
The Bears doubled their lead to two on their second power-play goal of the game at 18:50 of the first period on a goal by Jessica Silveira. Following another interference penalty, Caitlin Manahan fed Silveira with a pass and Silveria beat Oswego State goaltender Catherine Cote (So., Val D'Or, Quebec) for a two-goal lead.
After a scoreless second period, Kathryn Sbrocchi (Sr., Mississauga, Ont.) cut the Bears lead to one at 3:17 of the third period. Sbrocchi's goal was her second in as many games, as she netted a shorthanded goal in Saturday's contest. Megan Howe (So., Stratford, Ont.) was credited with the assist.
The Lakers pulled Cote with 1:45 remaining in regulation looking for the game-tying goal. Oswego State fired two shots on net with the extra attacker, but Salvarinas was able to come up with the saves to preserve the victory.
With the win the Bears improve to 2-4-1 overall and 2-4-1 in ECAC West play.
Cote finished with 23 saves and Salvarinas finished with 33 saves for the Bears.
Oswego State was unable to generate any offense on the power play, coming up empty on five attempts. The Bears scored on their first two attempts, finishing 2-for-7 on the power play.
