Monsignor Martin, West Seneca Move On to Championship

Monsignor Martin and West Seneca will face each other in the Western New York Girls Varsity Ice Hockey League Championship at 8 p.m. at Northtowns Arena, Amherst.
It was an exciting evening at the rink Wednesday when a second period goal by Orchard Park/Frontier’s Megan Urbank tied the game at 1-1. It would stay that way through the third, fourth and into the fifth period. It was then that West Seneca’s Nicole Kirchberger, assisted by Jillian Schrader got one past Goaltender Danielle Glinski ending the game at 2-1.
Glinski faced 39 shots from West Seneca while West Seneca Goalie Sydney Glynn faced 20.
The first period remained scoreless and West Seneca got the first shot in at 5:05 of the second when Kirchberger got one past Glinski, assisted by Erin Gehen.
In the first game of the evening, Monsignor Martin got on the scoreboard first off the stick of Tara Barnhardt, assisted by Ashley Songin and Julia Duquette. That was followed by one dumped in by Duquette, assisted by Marielle Buffamonte. Kenmore answered back when Kate Miller scored, assisted by Lina Mirabella.
In the second period it was Monsignor Martin’s Rachel Lenard with the only goal of the period. She got an assist from Rachel Ziarnowski putting the score at 3-1.
It was the Catholic schools again when Monsignor Martin’s Emma Ruggiero put the puck in the net assisted by Ziarnowski, ending the contest at 4-1.
Outstanding goaltending in both games was a key factor in both games.
A Section VI championship will be played on Tuesday, March 6. Monsignor Martin is not part of Section VI so West Seneca will face Kenmore. The puck drops at 6 p.m. on the Feature Rink at Northtowns Ice Center.
