Niagara Women Lose in CHA Playoffs

The third-seeded Niagara women’s hockey team (10-16-8; 3-6-3 CHA) saw their season come to an end in the 2012 CHA Tournament Semifinals with a 3-2 defeat to the second-seeded Robert Morris Colonials (18-9-4; 6-3-3 CHA) on Friday afternoon at Clearview Arena.

With less than four minutes to go in the third period and down 3-1, freshman forward Kayla Raniwsky netted her seventh goal of the season to bring the Purple Eagles back within one goal, but it was not enough to finish the comeback against the Colonials.

The Purple Eagles found the back of the net first, less than three minutes into the opening frame as junior forward Jenna Hendrikx recorded a powerplay goal off assists from junior forwards Kelsey Welch and Kathleen Bortuzzo.  The goal was Hendrikx's 34th career goal, tying her for seventh place on Niagara's Career Goal Scoring list with Candice Moxley (2001-05).

The Colonials responded with three straight goals, starting with a tally from junior forward Kelsey Thomas 6:25 into the period.  Senior forward Brianna Delaney followed with her own goal, assisted by junior Cobina Delaney and Thomas.

Freshman Rebecca Vint made it a 3-1 game in the second period, scoring the eventual game-winning tally off feeds from defender Brandi Pollock and forward Katelyn Scott.

Niagara goaltender Abby Ryplanski pushed aside 13 Colonial shots, while Colonials goalie Kristen DiCiocco made 24 saves.
