The event will mark the beginning of the team's 2012 Autism Awareness Project. The first 300 fans to arrive at Starr Rink will receive a free light blue special event t-shirt courtesy of Price Chopper, Crows, Oliveri's, the Colgate Bookstore, the Colgate Inn, the Hamilton Inn and Seven Oaks. Any fan wearing light blue, the color of autism, will get in for free.

It was a weekend of ice hockey at Buffalo State College with the men and women both holding their annual alumni games and then each playing a regular season game.

Maddy’s Game, the women’s alumni ice hockey game held in memory of Maddy  Loftus who was killed when Continental Flight 3407 crashed in Clarence in 2009, was held Saturday morning with two full teams playing competitive hockey. These girls don’t let fun get in the way of some serious hockey.

The white team beat the black team but there were several fun moments with the black team’s goalie also playing on defensive for several minutes.

During Friday and Saturday’s regular games, the Bengals wore pink uniforms to raise awarenss for breast cancer research. Proceeds from the game and the selling of tee shirts and baked goods was donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

On Friday evening Buffalo State dropped to Oswego State 7-0. Oswego Coach Diane Dillon returned to her hometown and had her Lakers scoring early and often. Buffalo played both goalies Jordan Lee making 17 saves and Jessica Garland making 10 in an attempt to stop the Lakers.

The Lakers put in four power play goals with Senior MacKenzie Lee having two goals, including the eventual game-winner. Lauren Gilpin also had two goals, Chelsea Hunt had her first of the year and Kathryn Sbrocchi scored the fourth power play goal and a final even-strength goal by Megan Howe. Hamburg’s Bridget Smith made 17 saves for the Lakers.

On Saturday the Bengals came out strong with Brianna Murphy scoring the first goal at 7:55 into the first period. They held the lead into the second when Oswego’s Carly Henderson put one past Jordan Lee. Less than a minute later Kelly Collins put in another for the Lakers and Chelsey Drake put in an insurance goal taking the final score 3-1 in favor of the Lakers.

Oswego Laker Kelly Collins, Fairport, was named Oswego’s Athlete of the Week for January 29.

Niagara University’s Sophomore Goalie Sarah Moses made 26 saves to earn her first career shutout, helping the Purple Eagles beat Robert Morris 1-0. Freshman Kalli Funk put in her sixth goal of the season for the victory.

Not the same story in Pennyslvania on Saturday night when Robert Morris answered back and beat the Purple Eagles 1-0. Moses returned to the net pushing aside 30 Colonial shots but Brianne Delaney got one past her in the third period to give the Colonials the win.

Niagara returns home to face Mercyhurst at 7 p.m. on Friday during the “Pink the Rink” initiative on Monteagle Ridge.

The Big Red of Cornell started the weekend off with a 6-4 win over St. Lawrence University. But Clarkson had other ideas the next night.

Clarkson upset the Cornell 5-3. With Cornell down 4-1 in the third, Erin Barley-Maloney and Chelsea Karpenko cut Clarkson’s lead to 4-3. Clarkson’s Juana Baribeau had a hat trick taking Clarkson to victory.

Cornell holds a five point lead over Harvard in the ECAC, moving Harvard to second and Clarkson tying with Quinnipiac for third.

Cornell is home to RPI and Union College this coming weekend.

Cortland Senior Goalie Katie Double, Farmington, stopped 30 goals as Cortland finished a sweep of Chatham on Saturday. It was a 2-0 victory with Erika Osborne, Sharon Springs, and Brianna Rossi, Stormville, getting the puck in the net.

Union College fell 3-1 to RPI on Friday when RPI’s Eleeza Cox, scoring with less than seven minutes to play in the first period, put in the winning goal. Union’s only goal came from Maddy Norton in the third period. RPI repeated the win on Saturday with a 3-0 shutout.

In WNY Girl’s Ice Hockey Federation last week Kenmore beat Amherst/Sweethome 5-2; West Seneca beat Kenmore 3-2; Williamsville beat Orchard Park/Frontier 3-1; West Seneca took Lancaster 13-0; it was Monsignor Martin over Amherst/Sweethome 7-0 and Williamsville over Kenmore 5-2.

Upcoming games see Kenmore facing Monsignor Martin and Amherst/Sweethome facing West Seneca on Tuesday, January 31.

Union 2; Brown 2
Union College tied ECAC opponent Brown University 2-2 on Friday. The Dutchwomen didn’t trail once throughout the contest, despite being outshot 38-22. Union is now 3-18-4 overall.

Senior Emilie Arseneault put the puck in first after it deflected off freshman Christine Valente. Freshman Kelly McGrath wasted no time in taking a shot from the point, which found Valente waiting in front of Brown’s goalie. With a smart move she got the puck to Arseneault who went top shelf on Netminder Aubree Moore.

Arseneault and Valente continued to ramp up energy for the Dutchwomen. Brown came on strong and in the second tied the score when Sarah Robson took the puck that had ricocheted across the net and sunk it in.

They went to the locker room at 1-1. In the third it was Valente taking Union to a lead but only to be answered back by Jessica Hoyle.

The game was sent into overtime. Union’s offense fired up as Panchuk quickly sent a shot towards Moore. Yang was there to protect her goaltender, sending the puck up the boards. Arseneault regained possession, flying down the ice on a breakaway. Moore made the save on the senior’s backhand and the game stayed at two a piece. With only two minutes left to play, Hoffman and Valente sent back-to-back shots at Moore. Soon after, Gallagher was tested with two shots from the Bears. Neither team let up, however, and time ran out as Norton and senior Chelsey Heinhuis each had shots blocked by Brown. Both squads left with an ECAC Hockey conference point as the game ended tied 2-2.

On Saturday, January 21 Union hosted their Fifth Annual Pink at the Rink Day against Yale University.

Overtime heroics from Sophomore Kristin Richards pushed the Niagara women’s hockey team to a 2-1 victory over the Syracuse Orange on Saturday.

With less than two minutes left in overtime, Syracuse freshman Shiann Darkangelo was called for high sticking, giving the Purple Eagles their second powerplay in OT. Thirteen seconds later Erin Burns connected with Richards, who ripped on past Orange Goalie Kallie Billadeau.

This is Niagara’s second overtime win of the season and puts them one behind its record of three set in 2007-08.

Niagara 2; Syracuse 1 (OT)
The Purple Eagles got on the board first when Jessica Hitchcock put in her 11th goal of the season. The Orange tied midway through the contest when Defender Kaillie Goonough got one past Sarah Moses.

Union EarnsTie

Despite a lively, four-goal second period, the Union College women’s ice hockey team earned their third tie of the season with a 2-2 final against the University of Connecticut at the Freitas Ice Forum on Tuesday night. The Huskies record moved to 3-13-6 overall, while the Dutchwomen left with a 3-16-3 record.

After a scoreless first period, that featured Union outshooting Connecticut 13-4, the second period looked like a completely different game. Each team scored twice and the Huskies held a 13-11 advantage in shots on goal.

Freshman Emily Snodgrass started the scoring for UConn with her sixth goal of the season just 37 seconds into the period. Sophomore Jocelyn Slattery brought the puck up the left wing and centered to Snodgrass in the slot for a one-timer into the net. The Dutchwomen tied the game up in the fifth minute when junior Jeannie Sabourin entered the offensive zone alone and beat Husky sophomore goaltender Nicole Paniccia to the stick-side.

Connecticut regained the lead at the 9:17 mark when sophomore Alexandra Vakos found the back of the net. Junior Maude Blain started the play from the backboards with a pass to junior defenseman Casey Knajdek. Knajdek blasted a shot on goal that was saved and Vakos picked up the rebound and placed the puck past Union senior goaltender Kate Gallagher. Just over two minutes later, the Dutchwomen erased their second deficit of the period. This time, junior Rhianna Kurio, assisted by Sabourin, lit the lamp with the equalizing score.

Neither team could put one in the net in the third period. UConn successfully killed off three Union power plays in the period. Overall, the Husky penalty kill went five-for-five and has killed off 27 of the last 28 opponent power plays.

In the overtime period, Connecticut held a 5-1 advantage in shots on goal, while Union had an overall advantage of 36-30.

For the game, Paniccia surpassed 30 saves for the second straight game as she stopped 34 shots. In net for the Dutchwomen, Gallagher provided 28 saves. In Union's last 10 games, five have gone into overtime with four being backstopped by the senior netminder.

After playing their final non-conference game of the season, Union is set to travel to ECAC foes Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend. The Dutchwomen face the Crimson on Friday, January 13th, at 7:00 p.m. and battle the Big Green on Saturday, January 14th, at 4:00 p.m.

Cornell Players Honored

ITHACA, N.Y. – After a successful opening week in January, two Cornell players have been honored by ECAC Hockey for their performances against Union and Rensselaer.

Senior forward Kendice Ogilvie has been named the ECAC Hockey Player of the Week, and freshman Monika Leck will take home Rookie of the Week Honors.

Ogilvie, who normally centers the fourth line for the Big Red, stepped up in with a six-point showing over the weekend as six of her teammates missed the games to play with Canada's under-22 national team. Ogilvie broke the ice just 52 seconds into the Union game on Friday, scoring her first goal of the season. Over the remaining 59 minutes, she assisted on four goals as Cornell rode to a 9-1 victory.

Ogilvie's weekend wasn't done yet. The senior once again struck first on Saturday at RPI, scoring what would wind up being the game-winning goal 11 minutes into the first period.

Assisting on that RPI game-winner was Leck – getting her 10th career point – and her day was not done there. Leck also assisted on Laura Fortino's power play goal in the second period.

One day earlier against the Dutchwomen, Leck scored her fourth and fifth goals of the season. Leck's first goal wound up being the game winner, and her second goal put Cornell ahead 7-1 in the third period.

Ogilvie takes home Player of the Week award for the first time in her four year career. She is the second Big Red player to win the honor this year, as Brianne Jenner claimed the prize on  Nov. 1.

Leck's Rookie of the Week honors are also a career first, and she is the third Cornell freshman to win this season. All three of Cornell's freshman forwards – Jillian Saulnier (twice) and Emily Fulton (once) – have now been named the league's top rookie at some point this year.

Ogilvie, Leck, and the rest of the Big Red are back in action Tuesday night against Colgate at 7 p.m. at Lynah Rink. It is the team's first home game since Thanksgiving weekend.

Cornell Defeats RPI

A day after winning his 100th game, coach Doug Derraugh got started on his next 100 as Cornell defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 3-0 at the Houston Field House in Troy on Saturday afternoon.

The No. 3 Big Red (12-2, 8-1 ECAC Hockey) extended its winning streak against the Engineers (5-13-4, 2-62) to eight games, and Cornell swept a weekend series for the fourth time in six tries this season. The Big Red is also on a five-game winning streak in conference play.

Cornell was again short-handed as six of its players – nearly one-third of the roster – were traveling with Canada's under-22 national team in Germany. But for the second game in a row, senior Kendice Ogilvie stepped up.

Ogilvie got the scoring started for the Big Red just past the halfway mark of the first period. After freshman Monika Leck dug the puck out of the corner, she found Ogilvie in the right circle. Ogilvie beat the Engineers' goalie over the shoulder, giving Cornell its 1-0 lead. Leck's assist gave her 10 career points.

The second period saw penalties galore in the early going, but Cornell fought off the Engineers' power plays and eventually got a man-advantage goal for itself. Laura Fortino scored for the second consecutive game, getting a cross-ice pass through the slot from Leck. Fortino earned her 90th career point with the goal.

With just 22 seconds remaining in the second period, Jenner got one of her own from the short side on an assist from Fortino. Jenner's shot was fired from the left circle, and the puck went in and out of the net so fast that referees needed a replay to be sure the goal counted. The goal was the 30th in Jenner's career.

The third period played out scoreless for both teams, allowing goalie Lauren Slebodnick to complete the shutout. She earned 15 saves in her second clean sheet of the year and kept her perfect record alive. She sits at 6-0 now and earned both of this weekend's victories.

The Big Red get a quick two-day break before ECAC and intrastate rival Colgate comes to Lynah Rink for the team's first home game since Thanksgiving weekend. The puck drops Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

Hamilton Sweeps Cortland

Katie Zimmerman recorded five points on three goals and two assists as the Hamilton women's ice hockey team completed a weekend sweep of Cortland with a 7-0 victory Saturday night. The Red Dragons fell to 2-7-1 with the loss, and the Continentals evened their record at 4-4.

Freshman goalie Katie Avery (Lewiston, ME/UMass Amherst Club) earned the start between the pipes and stopped 17 shots in 27 minutes, 21 seconds before giving way to senior Katie Double (Farmington/Victor H.S.), who made 16 saves over the final 32:39.

Kristen Pallen registered a goal and an assist, three other players scored one goal each for Hamilton, while Stephanie Lang, Laura DiCarlo and Jill Tokarczyk each recorded two assists. Tori Bogen started in goal, making six saves in 32:47. Sarah Schuchardt finished the game, registering three saves in 27:17.

Coach Derraugh Marks 100th Win

With more than a month since its last game and with nearly one-third of its roster missing, a rusty start would not have been completely out of the question for the Cornell women's ice hockey team.

Don't tell that to Kendice Ogilvie or the rest of the Big Red.

With just 52 seconds elapsed in Friday's road contest at Union, Ogilvie notched her first goal of the year off a pass from Erin Barley-Maloney, and the Big Red earned a 9-1 victory.

Cornell – playing its first game since Dec. 3 – earned its 11th victory of the year and the 100th in coach Doug Derraugh's career.

Derraugh becomes just the second coach in program history to win 100 games and is now 35 wins shy of Bill Duthie's all-time mark of 135 wins with the Big Red. It took Duthie a full eight seasons to reach the 100-win plateau, while Derraugh has accomplished the feat midway through his seventh year at Cornell.

The Big Red's nine goals was its most since Nov. 1 against Syracuse and its most ever against the Dutchwomen. All that despite six Cornell players – Catherine White, Chelsea Karpenko, Amanda Mazzotta, Hayleigh Cudmore, Jessica Campbell and Jillian Saulnier – missing the game as they travel with Canada's under-22 team for the Meco Cup in Germany.

The Big Red (11-2, 7-1 ECAC Hockey) extended its winning streak against Union (3-16-2, 1-8-1) to 15 and is now on a four-game conference winning run.

Ogilvie's goal – her first since the NCAA quarterfinals last season against Dartmouth – opened the gates for Cornell, and Monika Leck added to the lead nine minutes later. Leck, getting the puck after a nice forecheck by Ogilvie, skated around the net and attempted a wraparound shot. The puck squirted underneath the pads of Union goalie Shenae Lundberg and gave the Big Red a 2-0 advantage. Leck's goal was her first since Nov. 1 against Syracuse and fourth of the year.

With just 16 seconds remaining in the first period, Alyssa Gagliardi took a tripping penalty. The Dutchwomen capitalized, potting a goal from a scramble in front with 2.7 seconds remaining to make it a 2-1 advantage for Cornell heading into the first intermission.

The second period was better for the Big Red, who didn't allow a goal and scored three of its own. The first came off the stick of Emily Fulton, who got her own rebound and trickled the puck past Lundberg.

Next was a Cornell first for Erin Barley-Maloney, a senior who transferred from Vermont last season but did not play her first game for the Big Red until this year. Her last goal with Vermont came on Nov. 28, 2009 against Dartmouth.

Though she went more than two years between goals, Barley-Maloney took less than two periods for her next one, as she scored on the power play in the third period to give Cornell an 8-1 lead. Barley-Maloney ended the game with four points on two goals and two assists.

Assisting on Barley-Maloney's first goal was Rebecca Johnston, a fifth-year senior who notched her 75th career assist and 150th career point on the play. The goal caused a goalie change, as Union's Alana Marcinko replaced Lundberg.

Defenseman Laura Fortino added the third goal of the second period on a nice give-and-go down low with Brianne Jenner. Fortino, skating down the right side of the rink, passed to Jenner in the corner behind the end line. Jenner gave the puck right back, and Fortino fired a laser past Marcinko to make it 5-1.

Xandra Hompe extended the lead to 6-1, scoring her first goal of the season in the third period. She last scored on Jan. 8, 2011 against Brown. Hompe, who also plays for the Big Red soccer team, tallied two goals on the soccer pitch this year.

Leck added her second goal of the game just over a minute later, and after Barley-Maloney's second goal, Lauriane Rougeau capped the Cornell scoring.

In net for Cornell was sophomore Lauren Slebodnick, who maintained her perfect winning percentage by making 15 saves and moved to 5-0 on the season. Freshman goalie Katelyn Pippy also saw her first career action with the Big Red, playing the final 10:39 of the contest and making three saves, including an excellent one on a two-on-one.

Cornell stays on the road for a game Saturday afternoon at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 3 p.m. in Troy. Cornell has beaten RPI seven consecutive times.

Potsdam Over Plattsburgh

The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team (4-7-1, 2-7-1 ECAC
West) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead, but was unable to hold off
eighth-ranked Plattsburgh State (9-3-1, 7-0-1 ECAC West), falling 5-2 at
home on Friday afternoon. Cardinal junior forward Teal Grove (Berwick,
Ontario/Ontario Hockey Academy) scored two goals and freshman forward
Shannon Stewart (Pickering, Ontario/Durham West Lightning) added a goal
and two assists to lead Plattsburgh.

Potsdam struck first on its very first opportunity of the contest. Just
1:49 into the game senior captain Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket,
Ontario/Aurora Panthers) took control of the puck at the left side of the
net and centered it. Freshman forward Izzy Fayerman (Calgary, Alberta/The
Edge) tipped the pass and sophomore forward Jenn Crawford (Burlington,
Ontario/Stoney Creek Sabres) slammed it home from the slot. The goal
seemed to wake up the Cardinals. After building pressure over the next
four minutes sophomore defenseman Allison Era (Glendale, Ariz./LA Selects
U-19) ripped a shot from the point that rang the crossbar on its way in to
tie the score at 1-1 at the 6:10 mark. Plattsburgh’s Stewart assisted on
the goal. Just 52 seconds later junior forward Jordan Caldwell (Denver,
Colo./Colorado Selects U-19) picked up the puck in the neutral zone, got
behind the Potsdam defense and lifted a shot over the right shoulder of
Bears junior goalie Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) for a 2-1
lead. The Cardinals outshot Potsdam 19-8 in the first period.

The second period was played much tighter defensively. Neither team had
many shots through the first 10 minutes, but Plattsburgh capitalized on
its second power play. Cardinal freshman defenseman Alyssa Parke
(Lynbrook, N.Y./National Sports Academy) fired a shot from the point and
Grove tipped it past Conophy for a 3-1 lead. Era recorded the second
assist on the play. The Bears killed off one other penalty in the period
and trailed 3-1 at the break.

Potsdam wasted no time in the third period. At the 1:10 mark, sophomore
forward Jessica Silveira (Brampton, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) fired the
puck off the right pad off Plattsburgh junior goalie Sydney Aveson (West
Covina, Calif./Minnesota State) and in, to cut the gap to 3-2. However,
two minutes and 18 seconds later, the Cardinals regained the two-goal lead
with another power-play marker. Stewart tipped a Parke shot from the point
to make it 4-2. Era also recorded an assist. The Bears matched
opportunities with Plattsburgh for the remainder of the contest, but
didn’t get any closer. With just 42 seconds remaining, Grove buried a
rebound off a Stewart shot to close the scoring at 5-2. Freshman forward
Morgan MacInnis (Cornwall, Ontario/Nepean Wildcats) notched the final
assist.

Conophy finished with 44 saves for Potsdam and Aveson stopped 16 to earn
the win. Plattsburgh outshot the Bears 49-18 and was 2-4 on the power
play. Potsdam was 0-1 on the man advantage.

“I was very pleased with our effort and execution for the most part,” said
Bears Head Coach Jay Green. “We had a couple fundamental breakdowns that
cost us goals five-on-five. Teams like Plattsburgh capitalize on those
types of mistakes. When you’re in the box, talented teams are going to
take advantage. But there were times when we were able to put pressure on
them and skate with them, so I’m proud of that.”

Potsdam is back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 10, when they travel to
Castleton State to take on the Spartans at 4 p.m.
