Neumann Over Buffalo State 2-1

Neumann’s Kayla Dubowski scored at the 3:07 mark of the overtime period to lift the Knights (1-1-2/1-1-2) to a 2-1 win over Buffalo State (2-3-1/1-2-1) in an ECAC West game this afternoon at the Ice Arena.

Neumann opened the scoring midway through the first period, but the Bengals responded less than 20 seconds later on the power play as Mel White (Snohomish, WA/Archbishop Murphy) recorded her first goal of the season, assisted by Courtney Carnes (Winslow, ME/Winslow).  Neither team would find the back of the net again until the extra session.

The Bengals held a 33-22 advantage in shots.  Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, CO/Widefield) had 20 saves for Buffalo State.

Buffalo State will next host Chatham on Friday at 4 p.m.

Nu Skates to Tie

Freshman forward Kalli Funk netted the game tying goal with 14 seconds left in the third period to help the Niagara women’s hockey team (6-6-3) come away with a point in a 3-3 non-conference draw against the Maine Black Bears (7-5-2) Sunday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

"It was a great game today, battling back for the tie," said head coach Josh Sciba.  "We had a lapse in the third, and Maine took advantage.  I thought our powerplay was much better and our penalty kill was excellent.  Moses did a great job today."

Despite Niagara entering the final period with a two goal lead, the Black Bears stormed back with three unanswered goals to gain the lead with less than two minutes left in the game.  Niagara pulled netminder Sarah Moses at the 19:46 mark and Funk would capitalize with the extra-man, sneaking one behind Maine goaltender Kylie Smith for her third goal of the season.  The goal came off a feed from sophomore forward Kaleigh Chippy, her sixth helper of the season.

"We have to learn how to play with a lead as a young team," added Sciba.

Freshman Kayla Raniwsky started the scoring for Niagara halfway through the first period for her third tally of the season.  She was assisted by defender Kelsey Gunn.  Junior forward Kelsey Welch grabbed her seventh goal of the season when she capitalized on a short-handed situation, giving the Purple Eagles a 2-0 lead 14:55 into the second stanza.  The goal was assisted off a feed from Leah Whittaker.  Despite Niagara being ahead by two, the scoring chances remained even at 16 at the end of 40 minutes of play.

The third period would be dominated by the Black Bears, as they outshot Niagara 20-5.  A goal off the stick of Brittany Dougherty 6:15 into the final twenty minutes began the Black Bear’s comeback.  She was assisted by Myriam Crouss and Brittany Huneke.  Freshman Tori Pasquariello netted the next two goals to give Maine the 3-2 lead.  The freshman's first tally came at the 5:05 mark after senior defender Ashley Norum found Pasquariello for the tap in.  Less than four minutes later, Pasquariello would find the back of the net again off feeds from Dominique Goutsis and Huneke.

Moses finished the game with 33 saves, while Smith pushed aside 21 shots, including three in overtime.

The Purple Eagles travel back to Monteagle Ridge where they will host St. Cloud State for a two-game series.  The first game is Friday, Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. and the finale of the weekend series is Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m.

RIT Overpowers Potsdam

The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team lost to RIT by the
final score of 6-0. Celeste Brown (Great Falls, Mont./National Sports
Academy) recorded a hat trick for the Tigers, who had four different
players score a goal.

The Tigers struck first, eight minutes into the first period on a power
play goal. Sophomore Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)
took a shot from from the left side that sophomore goalie Dawna Salvarinas
(Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) got a piece of. The puck trickled
through her pads and barely crossed the goal line before a Potsdam
defender could knock it out. RIT added a second goal at 17:43 when Megan
Kobar (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Chaos) beat Salvarinas between the pads.
Potsdam’s best  chance to score was early in the first period when leading
scorer Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) had
back-to-back shots that were saved by the RIT goalie Ali Binnington
(Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs).

RIT would pull away with three second period goals. Brown got the scoring
started at 5:52. That score was followed quickly by Melissa Bromley
(Aurora, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) finding the back of the net only 56
seconds later. The final goal came off the stick of Brown at 13:21 on an
assist from Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, Calif./L.A. Selects).

The third period saw RIT tack on the final goal at the 12:11 mark. Brown
completed the hat trick after Kunichika won the face off and Brown took
the puck and tucked a shot in the top right corner of the net.

Salvarinas stopped 42 shots in the losing effort while Binnington recorded
her first career shutout for the Tigers.

The Bears return to action next Saturday, November 19, at home against
Oswego. The puck will drop at 2 p.m.

NU's Streak Ends in Maine

The Niagara women's ice hockey team (6-6-2; 0-0-0 CHA) were handed its first loss in six games by the University of Maine (7-5-1; 2-3-1 HE), dropping a 3-0 decision Saturday afternoon at Alfond Arena.

Two minutes into the opening period, freshman forward Tori Pasquariello tallied the only goal needed for the Black Bears to secure the victory.  The goal was assisted by Missy Denk and Ashley Norum.  Maine goaltender Brittany Ott stymied 19 Niagara shots for the shutout.

"We were beat tonight by a hungry, physical Maine team," said head coach Josh Sciba.  "They took it to us and deserved the win.  I'm happy with our penalty kill today, but our overal effort and hunger has to be better tomorrow."

Junior forward Brittany Dougherty made it a two-goal game 8:03 into the first period off a short-handed tally for her eighth of the season.  Maine outshot Niagara 13-5.

The final goal of the game came 32 seconds into the final stanza, sealing the 3-0 win for the Black Bears. Senior Myriam Crousette hit the back of the net off assists from Dougherty and Melissa Gagnon.

Niagara netminder Abby Ryplanski made 29 stops while Jocey Kleiber, Kelsey Gunn and Kaleigh Chippy led the Purple Eagles in shots on goal with three.

Oswego Falls to Utica

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team was unable to complete a second comeback in as many games, falling to Utica College, 3-1, in the second game of a home-and-home series on Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

Utica's Carmen Johnson scored twice and Megan Myers tallied a goal and an assist, as the Pioneers won their first conference game this season.

Following a scoreless first period that featured 18 total shots and four combined penalties, Utica scored the first goal of the game at 12:32 of the second period on Johnson's first of two goals on the game. Myers received a pass from Samantha Pucci behind the net and found Johnson in front of the net, who beat Oswego State goaltender Catherine Cote (So., Val D'Or, Quebec) five hole for the game's first goal.

Myers gave Utica a two-goal lead at 15:24 of the second period. Myers, who assisted on the Pioneers' first goal just a few minutes earlier, beat Cote on her glove side after Cote attempted to cover the puck up with her glove following a shot from Meghan McMahon, but the puck was kicked away off the skate of a Laker defender. The puck made its way onto Myers' stick and she capitalized, giving Utica a 2-0 lead heading into the second period intermission.

The Lakers were held scoreless during the first two periods despite registering 33 shots on goal, 20 of which came in the second period. Oswego State had a few opportunities to get on the scoreboard, but Utica goaltender Jennifer Hamel kept the Lakers scoreless, making 33 saves in the first 40 minutes of the game.

Oswego State cut the Utica lead to one at 2:57 of the third period after assistant captain Jillian Bergeron (Sr., Brockville, Ont.) scored off a slap shot from the slot between two Utica defenders. Bergeron skated into the Utica defensive zone and fired a slap shot that beat Hamel stick side top shelf to give the Lakers their first goal of the game.

Utica sealed the victory with a goal late in the third period at 18:15 to give the Pioneers a two-goal lead. Johnson skated into the Oswego State defensive zone and sent a slap shot through traffic from the blue line that would get deflected in mid air by a defender's stick, redirected the puck over the stick-side shoulder of Cote.

All four goals were scored at even strength, as both teams finished 0-for-4 on the power play. The Lakers outshot the Pioneers 39-29 for the game, but registered just six shots on goal during the third period.

With the loss, the Lakers dropped to 2-3-1 overall and 2-1-1 in ECAC West play, while the Pioneers improved to 3-3-0 overall and 1-3-1 in ECAC West play.

The Lakers continue conference play on Friday, Nov. 19 when they travel to Potsdam for a two-game series with the Bears.

Knott's Goal Ties Buffalo State and Neumann

Buffalo State (2-2-1/1-1-1) senior defenseman Leah Knott (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) scored with just one second remaining in regulation to earn a 2-2 tie against visiting Neumann (0-1-2/0-1-2) in an ECAC West game at the Ice Arena.

After a scoreless first period, Neumann finally opened the scoring with just over five minutes remaining in the second stanza.  Buffalo State answered just over a minute later, however, when Christine Williams (Niagara Falls, NY/Niagara Falls) scored just seven seconds into a Bengals’ power play.  Neumann reclaimed the lead with a power-play goal of its own early in the third period, but Knott cashed in on a wild scramble in front of the Knights’ goal and scored with one tick remaining on the clock.  Williams and Lauren Mallo (Maple Ridge, BC/Thomas Haney) picked up assists on the tying goal.  Neither team was able to score in the five-minute extra session.

Buffalo State held a 27-23 edge in shots on goal, as Jordan Lee (Colorado Springs, CO/Widefield) made 21 saves in goal for the Bengals.  Buffalo State finished 1 for 6 on the power play, and the Knights were 1 for 8.

Brown Beats Union in Women's Ice Hockey

In a fierce battle against ECAC Hockey foe Union, it was Brown that came out on top as senior co-captain Katelyn Landry tallied the game-winning goal with just 72 seconds left in the contest. Brown goaltender Katie Jamieson put Brown in a position to take the victory, making 43 saves in her first shutout of the season.

Union (3-9-1, 1-4-1) came out strong in the first period, out-shooting Brown 13-1 in first 10 minutes of the initial frame. The Dutchwomen benefited from three Brown (2-2-3, 1-2-3) infractions, but the Bear penalty kill was impressive, blanking Union on all three opportunities.

The Brown offense got in gear in the second, finding chances and the Bears' first power play, but Union goalie Shenae Lundberg was able to fend off Bruno's attack.

Brown nearly broke the scoreless tie 4:19 into the third period, when rookie Shannon Flatley took control of the puck deep in the Brown zone and went end-to-end, skating past several Union defenders. Flatley came up on the stick side of Lundberg, and found sophomore Emilie Dolan for the one-time opportunity, but the Union netminder was able to make a great save on the Bears offensive offer.

With just 1:12 left in the game and overtime seeming likely, freshman Janice Yang took the pass from classmate Kaitlyn Keon and made into the Dutchwomen zone, before finding Landry in position for the go-ahead goal.

With their first conference win of the season, the Bears move into a seventh-place tie with St. Lawrence in the ECAC standings. Union is now tied with Colgate for eleventh place.

The Dutchwomen outshot the Bears 43-22, with Lundberg making 21 saves on the evening.

Union will be back in action after a two-week break on Sunday, November 27th. The Dutchwomen take on Providence College at Messa Rink at 2:00 p.m. The contest will be the first non-conference game after six straight ECAC opponents.
