RIT Overpowers Potsdam

The SUNY Potsdam women’s hockey team lost to RIT by the
final score of 6-0. Celeste Brown (Great Falls, Mont./National Sports
Academy) recorded a hat trick for the Tigers, who had four different
players score a goal.

The Tigers struck first, eight minutes into the first period on a power
play goal. Sophomore Kolbee McCrea (Wawa, Ontario/Burlington Barracudas)
took a shot from from the left side that sophomore goalie Dawna Salvarinas
(Mississauga, Ontario/Brampton Thunder) got a piece of. The puck trickled
through her pads and barely crossed the goal line before a Potsdam
defender could knock it out. RIT added a second goal at 17:43 when Megan
Kobar (Calgary, Alberta/Calgary Chaos) beat Salvarinas between the pads.
Potsdam’s best  chance to score was early in the first period when leading
scorer Annmarie Lewis (Newmarket, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) had
back-to-back shots that were saved by the RIT goalie Ali Binnington
(Oakville, Ontario/Mississauga Chiefs).

RIT would pull away with three second period goals. Brown got the scoring
started at 5:52. That score was followed quickly by Melissa Bromley
(Aurora, Ontario/Aurora Panthers) finding the back of the net only 56
seconds later. The final goal came off the stick of Brown at 13:21 on an
assist from Kourtney Kunichika (Fullerton, Calif./L.A. Selects).

The third period saw RIT tack on the final goal at the 12:11 mark. Brown
completed the hat trick after Kunichika won the face off and Brown took
the puck and tucked a shot in the top right corner of the net.

Salvarinas stopped 42 shots in the losing effort while Binnington recorded
her first career shutout for the Tigers.

The Bears return to action next Saturday, November 19, at home against
Oswego. The puck will drop at 2 p.m.
