Buffalo State Splits Weekend Series

The Buffalo State Women's Ice Hockey team spit weekend games with the University of Massachusetts (Boston) with a 3-1 win in their home opener and a 4-2 loss on Saturday.

Depew's Brianna Murphy scored a shorthanded goal and added an assist to take Buffalo to the lead in their season-opening victory on Friday. The Bengals dominated the second period, peppering the Beacons with 16 shots when Murphy's shot when in just before the end of the perod.

They pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third when Niagara Falls native Christine Williams put one in. When UMass pulled their goalie with more than three minutes remaining, Rochester's Jeyna Minnick put in her first collegiate goal.

Sophomore Jordan Lee made her first start in goal as a Bengal, turning aside 27 of the 28 shots.

The story wasn't to be repeated on Saturday even though Nicole Laurel gave Buffalo an early start with an unassisted goal as the first shot of the game. Tara Boliard then scored her first career goal giving the Bengals a 2-0 advantage after the first period.

The Beacons cut the lead in half and took the lead in the third, including an empty-net goal with 54 seconds left to play.

Cheektowaga's Jessica Garland made 19 saves in goal for the Bengals.

Buffalo State opens ECAC West play Friday when they host Potsdam at 7 p.m.
