Oswego Women Downed by Adrian 5-3

Adrian's Danielle Smith tallied a goal and two assists, while teammate Olivia Rork recorded a goal and an assists, as the Bulldogs defeated the Oswego State women's ice hockey team, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs scored twice on the power play and added two goals in the third period to break open a close game to complete the two-game sweep of the Lakers.

Much like on Friday night, the Bulldogs took advantage of Laker miscues, scoring the game's first goal on the power play. Following a tripping penalty, Smith collected a loose puck in front of the net and beat goalie Catherine Cote (So., Val D'Or, Quebec) for the game's first goal at 17:31 of the first period. Adrian's Olivia Rork wristed a shot on net from the right faceoff circle that was knocked down by Cote directly in front of the net that Smith corralled and beat Cote glove side.

The Lakers responded just 44 seconds later on forward Mackenzie Lee's (Sr., Caledonia, N.Y.) first goal of the season to even the game at one heading into the first period intermission. The scoring play started with a scramble for possession along the boards that included forward Kelly Collins (Sr.,Fairport, N.Y.). Collins won the battle with a Adrian defender and pushed the puck to forward Jillian Bergeron (Sr., Brockville, Ont.). Bergeron found Lee in the slot, who fired a shot past Adrian goalie Emily Michelin glove side to tie the game.

Adrian regained the lead at 2:44 of the second period off a goal by Ashley Gniewek on the rebound. Smith had a breakaway opportunity from the blueline, but her attempt at a second goal was stopped by Cote on her glove side. Cote allowed a rebound attempt on her stick side, where Gniewek was in position all alone for the easy goal into the empty net.

Oswego State again was able to come up with the equalizing goal, this time on the power play at 9:28 of the second period. With the extra skater, Lee dumped a pass into the offensive zone that was misplayed by Adrian. Oswego State forward Carly Henderson (So., Markham, Ont.) handled the loose puck and had a breakaway attempt, which she capitalized on, beating Michelin stick side. Henderson's goal came 1:04 into a power play opportunity.

The Bulldogs took their third lead of the game at 12:00 of the second period on a slap shot by Courtney Millar at the blueline. Smith found Millar at the blueline, who blasted a shot through traffic that beat Cote glove side. Cote was screened on the play by two Adrian skaters and never was able to locate the puck.

Adrian increased its lead to two at 4:19 of the third period on the team's second power-play goal of the game. Smith found Rork behind the Laker net with the extra skater. Nobody picked up Rork as she made her way in front of the net and pushed a shot through Cote's legs for the goal. Rork's goal came with roughly 30 seconds remaining on a slashing penalty.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to three at 7:58 of the third period on a goal by Lauren Zachwieja. Zachwieja received a pass from Hannah McGowan in the slot and pushed a pass that went through the legs of Cote.

The Lakers cut the deficit to two when Collins slapped a shot from the slot past Michelin glove side. Collins took a pass from defender Emily Marks (Fr., Courtice, Ont.) and skated into the slot, where Collins was left all alone to get off a clean shot. Collins finished with a goal and an assist for a two-point night.

Oswego State outshot Adrian 34-31, including 13-6 in the third period. Cote finished with 26 saves on 31 shots faced in a losing effort for the Lakers, while Michelin finished with 31 saves on 34 shots faced to earn the victory for the Bulldogs.

The Lakers limited the Bulldogs' power play chances, committing only four penalties throughout the course of the game. Adrian finished 2-for-4 on the power play, while Oswego State finished 1-for-5, registering 10 shots.

The loss drops the Lakers to 0-2-0 overall, while the victory for Adrian improves its record to 2-0-0 overall.

Oswego lost to Adrian in the first game of the series 3-0 loss.

In a game that featured 17 penalties and 34 penalty minutes, the Lakers finished 0-for-6, recording 18 shots. The Bulldogs found success on their power play, scoring twice on eight attempts, recording 13 shots.

The Lakers will begin ECAC West play when they face Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 3 p.m.
