RIT Has Winning Weekend

RIT's women's ice hockey team, ranked No. 2 in Division III heading into the weekend, had quite an impressive showing, defeating No. 8 Manhattanville, 6-3 on Friday, and defending national champion, No. 1 Norwich, 4-1 on Saturday to claim its second straight Norwich ECAC East/West Showcase title.

Junior forward Tenecia Hiller was named the Tournament MVP, after tallying three goals in the two wins.

Sophomore forward Kourtney Kunichika, freshman defenseman Morgan Scoyne, and sophomore goaltender Laura Chamberlain were all named to the All-Tournament Team.  Kunichika tallied four points (2-2-4) in the two games, while Scoyne scored the game-winning goal, the first of her collegiate career on Saturday, while Chamberlain made 43 saves in the two wins.

Freshman Celeste Brown tallied her first two collegiate goals over the weekend, while classmate Lindsay Grigg recorded her first assist.  Junior forward Ariane Yokoyama, who led the nation with 33 assists last season, recorded three over the weekend.  Dating back to last season, she now has at least a point in 11 straight contest and an assist in 10 straight games.

RIT returns to action this weekend, as they host Utica in a pair of ECAC West contests at Ritter Arena.  Both Saturday and Sunday’s contests get underway at 3 p.m.  RIT is 12-2-0 all-time against the Pioneers and have won eight straight in the series dating back to Feb. 2, 2008.  Last year, RIT went 3-0 against the Pioneers, outscoring them 11-3.

Union Women Fall to Quinnipiac

The Dutchwomen fell 5-1 to Quinnipiac on Saturday at Messa Rink.  Sophomore Amanda Colin tallied the game-winner with less than five minutes left in the first period.  Union is now 2-7 on the season with a 0-2 mark in the ECAC, while the Bobcats move to 2-5 and 2-0.

Colin scored her first goal of the season at the 15:49 mark after being set up by freshman Nicole Kosta and junior Brittany Lyons. Kosta moved in and wound up to take a shot, before quickly passing to Colin on the opposite side of the net.  Although junior goaltender Alana Marcinko instinctively made her way over, the forward went top shelf to put the Bobcats up 2-0.

Quinnipiac was first on the board with junior Breann Frykas tallying her first goal of the season. The forward took a slap shot from the top right corner, and the puck made its way through several bodies before finding the back of the net.

The Dutchwomen tried to capitalize on impressive play-making by senior Molly Kate Devin, who set up freshman Alex Tancrell-Fontaine from the top left corner.  The defenseman came within five feet of junior goaltender Victoria Vigilanti before firing off a shot that barely went wide.

Facing 12 shots in the first period alone, Marcinko made back-to-back saves on junior Regan Boulton and sophomore Shelby Wignall.  The netminder fended off an intense slapshot from Boulton and then quickly recovered to keep Wignall from going five-hole.

The second period began with an immediate scoring opportunity for the Dutchwomen, with sophomore Maddy Norton blocking a Quinnipiac shot to keep the puck in the Bobcats' zone.  Norton then dished to Devin down the left side of the ice.  Freshman Camille Corbin picked up the senior's pass and she attempted to get a shot off at the right side of Vigilanti.  However, the puck was quickly poked away by the junior goaltender.

Quinnipiac extended their lead to 3-0 at the 6:55 mark when sophomore Kelly Babstock moved in on Marcinko's left. The forward patiently shot the puck into the high corner of the net.  Despite a late rush of shots coming from senior Lauren Hoffman and freshman Bryanne Panchuk, the Dutchwomen remained scoreless at the end of the period.

The Bobcats did not let up on their pace, scoring one minute and six seconds into the final frame. Junior Kristen Eklund scored her first goal of the season, unassisted, by burying a shot into the left corner.  Just 30 seconds later, senior Jordan Elkins took a slap shot that bounced off of the ice and deflected in past Marcinko to put Quinnipiac up 5-0.

The Dutchwomen responded with just under 14 minutes left to play when junior Emma Rambo scored her first goal of the season. Rambo fired from the sharp left of the net, and Vigilanti seemed to have made the save. However, a moment later the puck slowly slid across the goal line to put the score at 5-1.

With a last minute back-hand attempt coming from sophomore Stefanie Thomson, time ran out to leave Quinnipiac with their second ECAC win of the weekend. Vigilanti made 19 saves while Marcinko and senior Kate Gallagher combined to earn 24 saves on the evening. It was Gallagher's first game of the season.

Despite a late goal in the third period from freshman Bryanne Panchuk the Union College women's ice hockey team fell to Princeton 2-1 on Friday.  After 19 scoreless minutes, Princeton freshman Brianna Leahy scored the go-ahead goal with less than 60 seconds left in the first period.  Leahy's first collegiate goal was scored at the 00:53 mark in the first period after the Tigers had just come off of the penalty kill.

From the moment the puck was dropped, a quick pace was set by both squads.  Freshman Christine Valentewas a powerhouse for the Dutchwomen, creating several scoring opportunites throughout the game.  At the four minute mark of the first period, the forward nearly put Union on the board by attempting to get a shot off of freshman Alex Tancrell-Fontaine's rebound.

Minutes later, Valente took a shot from her knees only five feet in front of Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber.  The senior was solid, however, earning a shut out by recording 19 saves.  Marcinko was excellent in the defeat, making 32 out of 34 saves for the Dutchwomen.

Down 1-0 at the start of the second period, Panchuk emerged as a defensive force, blocking shots to regain possession for the Dutchwomen.  Freshman Camille Corbin,  who had two shots in the second frame, attacked the net with a hard shot at the 10 minute mark while being taken down in the process.

The Tigers challenged back though, with excellent offense coming from junior Corey Stearns.  The forward dangled through Union's defense and nearly notched another goal for Princeton before Marcinko made the save.  Their momentum continued to grow with another chance coming from Leahy.  The freshman stole the puck stepping out of the penalty box and drove into the Dutchwomen's zone.

With less than 10 minutes left to play in the second period, sophomore Sally Butler scored her third of the season and put the Tigers up 2-0.  After receiving a feed from senior Paula Romanchuk at the middle, the forward buried a shot into the bottom right corner of the net.

Despite the two-goal deficit, Marcinko made vital plays in the final minutes of the frame to keep the Dutchwomen in the game.  After denying a scoring attempt by Leahy, the goaltender immediately slid across the net to her left to make a kick save on a shot from sophomore Denna Laing. In the remaining seconds, Marcinko made back-to-back butterfly saves on shots from Laing and sophomore Olivia Mucha, holding the Tigers to a two-goal lead.

At the start of the third period, junior Rhianna Kurio immediately fired off a shot to regain the Dutchwomen's momentum. Marcinko remained unshakeable in net, fending off advances from Leahy and a great shot by senior Heather Landry.

The Dutchwomen had one of the best scoring opportunites of the night when Kurio charged down the ice to make a centering pass to senior Emilie Arseneault.  Unfortunately, the forward could not get a stick on the puck before Weber jumped out to make the save.

With two minutes remaining in the game, Panchuk put the Dutchwomen on the board to make the game 2-1.  Seniors Molly Kate Devin and Dania Simmonds set the freshman up with an outstanding play after gaining an extra attacker with Marcinko out of net. Panchuk easily made her way down the right side, patiently waiting for the opportune moment, and shot the puck five-hole to cut the Tigers' lead in half.

However, down a player at the 00:35
mark, the Tigers held off the Dutchwomen in the remaining minute to keep the lead.

Union is back at home next weekend to take on Clarkson University on Friday, November 4th, at 7:00 p.m.  The Dutchwomen face St. Lawrence University on Saturday, November 5th, at 4:00 p.m. for their fourth ECAC game in a row.

Big Red Defeat Rival Brown

One day after scoring nine goals against Yale, the Cornell women's hockey team repeated the feat against ECAC Hockey and Ivy League rival Brown on Saturday afternoon.

The Big Red (3-0, 3-0 ECAC Hockey) put up two goals in the first period, four in the second and three in the third to topple the visiting Bears (1-1-1, 0-1-1) 9-0.

Freshman Jillian Saulnier got things started with her sixth goal of the season 9:21 into the game, and Chelsea Karpenko followed with two goals of her own. Not to be outdone, Saulnier got her own second goal 13 minutes into the second, and the rout was on.

Saulnier's second goal started a frantic three-goals-in-one-minute stretch for the Big Red, as Karpenko notched her third goal of the game 35 seconds after Saulnier's second, and freshman Monika Leck scored just 25 seconds later to make the game 6-0 heading into the final period.

Freshman Emily Fulton scored her first career goal 103 seconds into the third period, and Lauriane Rougeau got her second of the year at the midway point of the period. Catherine White, who had two goals on Friday night, closed out the Big Red scoring with only 32 seconds remaining.

Cornell has now started ECAC Hockey play at 3-0 for the third year in a row. The Big Red put up 49 shots Saturday, and that lofty number still managed to be its lowest of the season.

At the end of the game, Cornell's players totaled 23 points. Brianne Jenner and Hayiegh Cudmore tallied three assists each, and White had two assists to go with her goal.

On the defensive side, goalkeeper Lauren Slebodnick had 10 saves and a shutout in her first action of the season, giving usual starter Amanda Mazzotta a rest. Starting defenseman Amanda Young had a stellar +5 on the day, and Rougeau had three points to her name.

Cornell doesn't get much of a rest before its next game, a Tuesday-night scrum with local rival Syracuse at Lynah Rink. Faceoff is set for 7 p.m.

Oswego Women Downed by Adrian 5-3

Adrian's Danielle Smith tallied a goal and two assists, while teammate Olivia Rork recorded a goal and an assists, as the Bulldogs defeated the Oswego State women's ice hockey team, 5-3, Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center Ice Arena.

The Bulldogs scored twice on the power play and added two goals in the third period to break open a close game to complete the two-game sweep of the Lakers.

Much like on Friday night, the Bulldogs took advantage of Laker miscues, scoring the game's first goal on the power play. Following a tripping penalty, Smith collected a loose puck in front of the net and beat goalie Catherine Cote (So., Val D'Or, Quebec) for the game's first goal at 17:31 of the first period. Adrian's Olivia Rork wristed a shot on net from the right faceoff circle that was knocked down by Cote directly in front of the net that Smith corralled and beat Cote glove side.

The Lakers responded just 44 seconds later on forward Mackenzie Lee's (Sr., Caledonia, N.Y.) first goal of the season to even the game at one heading into the first period intermission. The scoring play started with a scramble for possession along the boards that included forward Kelly Collins (Sr.,Fairport, N.Y.). Collins won the battle with a Adrian defender and pushed the puck to forward Jillian Bergeron (Sr., Brockville, Ont.). Bergeron found Lee in the slot, who fired a shot past Adrian goalie Emily Michelin glove side to tie the game.

Adrian regained the lead at 2:44 of the second period off a goal by Ashley Gniewek on the rebound. Smith had a breakaway opportunity from the blueline, but her attempt at a second goal was stopped by Cote on her glove side. Cote allowed a rebound attempt on her stick side, where Gniewek was in position all alone for the easy goal into the empty net.

Oswego State again was able to come up with the equalizing goal, this time on the power play at 9:28 of the second period. With the extra skater, Lee dumped a pass into the offensive zone that was misplayed by Adrian. Oswego State forward Carly Henderson (So., Markham, Ont.) handled the loose puck and had a breakaway attempt, which she capitalized on, beating Michelin stick side. Henderson's goal came 1:04 into a power play opportunity.

The Bulldogs took their third lead of the game at 12:00 of the second period on a slap shot by Courtney Millar at the blueline. Smith found Millar at the blueline, who blasted a shot through traffic that beat Cote glove side. Cote was screened on the play by two Adrian skaters and never was able to locate the puck.

Adrian increased its lead to two at 4:19 of the third period on the team's second power-play goal of the game. Smith found Rork behind the Laker net with the extra skater. Nobody picked up Rork as she made her way in front of the net and pushed a shot through Cote's legs for the goal. Rork's goal came with roughly 30 seconds remaining on a slashing penalty.

The Bulldogs pushed their lead to three at 7:58 of the third period on a goal by Lauren Zachwieja. Zachwieja received a pass from Hannah McGowan in the slot and pushed a pass that went through the legs of Cote.

The Lakers cut the deficit to two when Collins slapped a shot from the slot past Michelin glove side. Collins took a pass from defender Emily Marks (Fr., Courtice, Ont.) and skated into the slot, where Collins was left all alone to get off a clean shot. Collins finished with a goal and an assist for a two-point night.

Oswego State outshot Adrian 34-31, including 13-6 in the third period. Cote finished with 26 saves on 31 shots faced in a losing effort for the Lakers, while Michelin finished with 31 saves on 34 shots faced to earn the victory for the Bulldogs.

The Lakers limited the Bulldogs' power play chances, committing only four penalties throughout the course of the game. Adrian finished 2-for-4 on the power play, while Oswego State finished 1-for-5, registering 10 shots.

The loss drops the Lakers to 0-2-0 overall, while the victory for Adrian improves its record to 2-0-0 overall.

Oswego lost to Adrian in the first game of the series 3-0 loss.

In a game that featured 17 penalties and 34 penalty minutes, the Lakers finished 0-for-6, recording 18 shots. The Bulldogs found success on their power play, scoring twice on eight attempts, recording 13 shots.

The Lakers will begin ECAC West play when they face Cortland on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 3 p.m.

Season Opener: Plattsburgh over Potsdam 5-0

Fourth-ranked Plattsburgh State (1-0, 1-0 ECAC West)
scored four third period goals to pull away from the SUNY Potsdam women’s
hockey team (0-1, 0-1) and post a season opening 5-0 win. Bears junior
goaltender Jen Conophy (Glenmont, N.Y./Albany Ice Cats) made 44 saves.

There was no scoring in the first period as Conophy and the Potsdam
defense slowed down the Cardinal defense. The Bears killed both of their
penalties in the period.

Midway through the second 20 minutes, Plattsburgh Alyssa Parke scored a
power play goal to give the Cardinals the lead for good. Teal Grove and
Ashton Hogan assisted on the marker. Despite being outshot 21-7 in the
second period, Potsdam trailed only 1-0 after 40 minutes.

Plattsburgh doubled its advantage on a goal by Jenny Kistner three minutes
into the final stanza. At 6:44 of the third period Emma Rutherford struck
on the power play. Ashton Hogan and Kistner notched the final two tallies
at 15:42 and 17:34 and the Cardinals finished the 5-0 win.

Plattsburgh outshot Potsdam 49-18. Cardinal goalie Sydney Aveson made 18
saves to earn the shutout victory.

“I was very proud of our effort tonight,” said Bears Head Coach Jay Green.
“Jen Conophy played very well in goal and (senior forward) Annmarie Lewis
(Newmarket, Ontario) was strong up front, but just didn’t have any luck).
Plattsburgh was very fast, big, and deep, but we played well defensively.
It was 1-0 entering the third period and we didn’t give up too many
quality chances.

Potsdam is back in action on Nov. 4-5 when the Bears faceoff against
Buffalo St. The puck drops at 7 p.m. on Friday and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Saulnier Scores First Career Goal AND First Hat Trick

Most people never forget their first career goal. Fewer forgot their first career hat trick. For Cornell freshman Jillian Saulnier, the memory of both should be vivid.

In her first career game, Saulnier scored two goals in the first period, another in the second and one more in the third to lead No. 3 Cornell to a 6-2 victory in its season and conference opener at ECAC Hockey rival Colgate on Tuesday night.

Saulnier’s four-goal night was the first for Cornell since Jessica Campbell scored four against Robert Morris in the second game of last season.

The Big Red (1-0, 1-0 ECAC Hockey) won its third consecutive ECAC opening game and its second consecutive season opener. Coach Doug Derraugh earned his 90th career victory, and the starting forward line of Saulnier, Rebecca Johnston and Brianne Jenner combined for five goals and four assists.

Saulnier wasted little time scoring her first career goal. The freshman was out on the Big Red’s first power play and scored the team’s opening goal. When fellow freshman Emily Fulton wrapped around the net and tried to push a shot past Colgate keeper Kimberly Sass, the puck bounced out into the middle of the ice, and Saulnier was there for the rebound goal.

Only 2:10 later, Saulnier struck again. Laura Fortino and Jenner set her up with terrific passing, and Saulnier stepped into a slap shot in the high slot for her second goal of the night.

The first period continued to get better for Cornell as its four-on-four unit got some successful work in when it scored the third goal of the frame. Thanks to a nice pass from Amanda Young up ice to Johnston, the Big Red had a two-on-one breakaway. Johnston waited until the last moment and then found Jenner with a cross-ice pass for an easy put-away and Cornell’s third goal of the period.

The second period was penalty-laden for both sides as the referees got a chance to use their whistles, calling eight penalties.

One of those penalties was by Saulnier, who committed a five-minute cross checking major. When Catherine White went into the box 24 seconds later, it set up a five-on-three for the Raiders that led to their first goal. The Big Red killed off more than a minute of the five-on-three and looked strong, but when goalkeeper Amanda Mazzotta went down to grab a loose puck at her feet, a stick nudged it back into play and Taylor Volpe went far post into the open net.

But the Raiders neutralized the rest of Saulnier’s long penalty by committing two of their own, setting up nearly two straight minutes of four-on-three hockey that culminated in a goal by senior captain Chelsea Karpenko. Fellow senior Catherine White and sophomore Hayleigh Cudmore earned the assists on the goal that put the Big Red up 4-1.

Fresh out of the penalty box, Saulnier got back into her coach’s good graces when she scored a short-handed goal that was beautifully set up by Cudmore and Johnston. Saulnier and Johnston had a two-on-one, and Johnston found the freshman to her left for another easy put-away. The goal was Saulnier’s third on just three shots.

Colgate (3-3, 0-1) stayed strong though and scored with just 33 seconds showing on the clock in the period to make it a 5-2 game at the second intermission.

Saulnier’s goal in the final period may have been the most impressive. Jenner passed to Lauriane Rougeau on the blue line, and the junior defender took a hard slapshot that was going high. Saulnier, standing in the front of the night, held her stick aloft and deflected the puck down past Sass.

At night’s end, Cornell held a giant 64-12 advantage in shots on goal and a 53-27 margin on faceoffs. That number was the most shots the Big Red took since Feb. 6, 2000 against Union.

Mazzotta made 10 saves and ends the first game of the year with a 2.004 goals against average.

Cornell returns to action in its home opener on Friday night at 7 p.m. against ECAC Hockey and Ivy League opponent Yale. After that game, the Big Red is back on the ice at home on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Brown.

CLARKSON SWEEPS SYRACUSE WITH 4-2 WIN ON SATURDAY

With the score tied at one through 40 minutes of play, Clarkson scored three goals in 7:30 to open the third period and sweep the Syracuse ice hockey team (2-4-0) on Saturday afternoon at Cheel Arena, 4-2. Holly Carrie-Mattimoe scored both goals for the Orange, while Jenesica Drinkwater made 27 saves in goal for SU, which will begin a five-game home stand beginning on Wednesday against Colgate at 7:00 p.m.

The Orange had two power play tallies on the day (2-of-5), while Clarkson was 1-of-4 on the man advantage. Clarkson held a 31-22 edge in shots.

The Golden Knights came at the Orange in the first period, outshooting SU 14-7 and taking a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game on a power play goal from Carly Mercer. With Syracuse in the box for tripping, Drinkwater made back-to-back stops on Jamie Lee Rattray on the doorstep. Mercer then grabbed the loose puck along the boards, circled towards the net and fired a shot that beat Drinkwater over the right shoulder.

SU had two chances on the power play during the opening frame, and had its best chance of the stanza with 1:45 to go when Caitlin Roach found Jordyn Burns in between the hashmarks for a one-timer that was stopped by Howe.

Syracuse quickly responded to the game at one as Carrie-Mattimoe scored just 52 seconds into the second period off a faceoff in the Clarkson defensive zone.Nicole Ferrara gathered a loose puck in the corner and fed Carrie-Mattimoe behind the goal, who then skated out and stuffed the puck between the post and the pad of Howe for her second goal of the season.

The Orange nearly took a 2-1 lead with less than five minutes left in the period when freshman Julie Knerr took a pass from out of the right corner and flung a backhand from atop the crease that just sailed over the crossbar.

Clarkson reestablished its lead with three goals in the first 7:30 of the third period. Gabrielle Kosziwka scored her third goal of the weekend after taking a feed from Kali Gillanders following a failed clearing attempt by the Orange and beating Drinkwater with a low shot.

The Golden Knights extended their lead to two on the power play three minutes later when Shelby Nisbet fired a shot through traffic and past the pad of Drinkwater for her second goal of the year. Clarkson made it 4-1 with 12:30 left in regulation as Rattray beat Drinkwater with a wrist shot under the glove.

SU continued to battle, and cut the Clarkson lead down to two midway through the frame as Carrie-Mattimoe got her second of the afternoon, capitalizing on a rebound off a Shiann Darkangelo shot from the opposite post with the Orange on the power play.
