NU Women Close Out First Part of Season with Loss to Clarkson

The Niagara women's hockey team (7-9-5) closed out its 2011 portion of the schedule with a 1-0 loss against the Clarkson Golden Knights (12-4-4), Sunday afternoon at Dwyer Arena.

The Golden Knights scored a power-play goal in the third period for the game's only tally.  Junior Hailey Wood found teammate Danielle Skirrow who one timed the puck behind freshman goaltender Abby Ryplanski  for her ninth goal of the season.  It was the second time Niagara has been shutout this season.

"Clarkson is a good team," said head coach Josh Sciba.  "We took penalties at inopportune times and they came up with plays today to capitalize on chances we gave them.  It was a close game and we're happier with the effort today than yesterday.  It just comes down to penalties and little details that we still didn't do at the right times."

Ryplanski pushed aside 20 Clarkson shots while junior Jessica Hitchcock ended the game with five looks on goal.

The Purple Eagles are back on the ice Friday, Jan. 13 when they face off against No. 6/6 Mercyhurst in a home and home series.  Action begins 7 p.m. at the Mercyhurst Ice Center and ends the following day at Dwyer Arena at 2 p.m.
