The Utica women's ice hockey team scored the game's final five goals and defeated Cortland, 7-2, Saturday night in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons fell to 2-4-1 overall and 0-4-1 in the conference, while the Pioneers improved to 5-6 and 2-5.
Junior Brianna Rossi (Stormville/Brewster Bulldogs) and freshman Chelsie Hausberger (Buffalo/Buffalo Bison) scored Cortland's goals with senior Amanda Maddalena (Howell, NJ/Wyoming Seminary) and sophomore Gina Tomei (Bronx/Sound Shore Warriors) each collecting an assist. Senior goalie Katie Double (Farmington/Victor H.S.) made 38 saves.
Six different players scored goals for Utica led by freshman Courtney May (Oxford, MI/Belle Tire) who netted a pair of goals. Freshman Nicole Kieffer (Rome/Lysander Lightning) recorded a goal and three assists and junior Carmen Johnson (Falls Church, VA/Washington Pride) and sophomore Brittany DelleChiaie (Leominster, MA/The Winchendon School) had one goal and one assist apiece. Junior Meghan Willet (Worcester, MA/Cushing Academy) collected two assists. Sophomore goalie Jennifer Hamel (Ithaca/Northwood School) stopped 25 shots, including all 13 she faced in the third period.
The game remained scoreless until late in the first period when the Pioneers scored back-to-back power-play goals at 18 minutes, 23 seconds and19:17. Cortland tied the game at 2-2 early in the second period with goals just 30 seconds apart. Rossi scored a power-play goal on a rebound for the Red Dragons' first goal, and Hausberger finished off a partial breakaway with a wrist shot from the left side that found the upper right corner. Utica closed the period with goals from DelleChiaie at 13:08 with the skater advantage and Kieffer at 19:26 for a 4-2 lead.
The Pioneers made it a 5-2 game at 3:32 of the third on sophomore Kristen Beckman's (Arnold, MD/Northwood School) goal and clinched the win with back-to-back goals from senior MacKenzie Roy (Concord, NH/Cushing Academy) at 13:55 on the power play and May at 15:13.
