Cornell Upsets Princeton 3-1

On its first road trip of the season, the No. 2/3 Cornell women’s hockey team got off to a great start with a 3-1 win at Princeton on Friday night.

The Big Red was held scoreless in a period for the first time all season when it went without a goal in the first 20 minutes, but two goals in the second period wound up being the difference makers.

With its full complement of skaters available for the first time in nearly two weeks, Cornell (6-1, 5-1 ECAC Hockey) held a 15-4 advantage over Princeton (4-4-1, 3-3-1) in shots after the first period. It seemed only a matter of time until the Big Red got on the scoreboard.

Two minutes into the second period was that time. Freshman Emily Fulton, skating up the middle of the ice, connected on a pass from the left side, and lit the lamp for the third time this season.

The Tigers got back into the game with a goal 10 minutes into the period, but the Big Red retook the lead for good less than two minutes after Princeton’s goal. With some nice passing from right to left along the blue line, Laura Fortino found Catherine White, who laid it off to Alyssa Gagliardi. Gagliardi, who had one goal in her career coming into the year, scored her second of this season on a hard slap shot through traffic.

The third period saw a tough stretch of penalty killing for the Big Red, including a 13-second stretch where it had to stave off a five-on-three opportunity for the home Tigers. But after that penalty was killed, just three minutes remained in the game.

Senior captain Rebecca Johnston, back in a Cornell uniform after playing for Team Canada last week, potted an empty-netter to seal the Big Red victory.

Goalkeeper Lauren Slebodnick picked up the win, her third of the year and second in a row. Slebodnick stopped 17 of the 18 shots she faced, and the Big Red offense wound putting 39 shots on goal itself.

Cornell returns to action in less than 24 hours as it gets back on the bus and drives to Camden, Conn., for a 4 p.m. puck drop at Quinnipiac.
