Elmira Women Over Cortland

Seven different players scored goals as the nationally eighth-ranked Elmira women's ice hockey team defeated Cortland, 8-1,Saturday night in ECAC West action at Alumni Arena. The Red Dragons fell to 2-2-1 overall and 0-2-1 in the conference with the loss, while the Soaring Eagles improved to 2-1 and 1-0.

Junior Chelsey Wright (Medford/Suffolk PAL) scored Cortland's goal with senior Maggie Giamo (Orchard Park/RIT) and freshman Chelsie Hausberger (Buffalo/Buffalo Bisons) collecting assists. Senior goalie Katie Double (Farmington/Victor H.S.) registered 39 saves.

Sophomore Tori Charron (Goodwood, ON/Aurora Panthers) paced Elmira with two goals and an assist. Senior Alex Bresler (Golden, CO/Colorado Select) and sophomore Maddy Charbonneau (Greeley, CO/Colorado Select) each recorded a goal and an assist, and four others scored once. Freshman Brooke Wilgosh (Regina, SK/Notre Dame Hounds) had three assists, and senior Lauren Campbell (Erie, PA/Chatham University) chipped in with two assists. Sophomore goalie Lisa Marshall (Powhatan, VA/Wayne St. University) made 23 saves.

Elmira led just 1-0 at the end of the first period as each team registered 11 shots. Bresler scored the lone goal at the 12 minute, 16 second mark. The Soaring Eagles pushed their lead to 3-0 as Charron scored 52 seconds into the second period and McPhail netted a goal at 9:56. Wright put Cortland on the scoreboard at the 14:10 mark of the second period when she knocked a loose puck in front past Marshall. Charron upped Elmira's lead to 4-2 at 17:54 just two minutes after Marshall denied Cortland sophomore Gina Tomei's (Bronx/Sound Shore Warriors) breakaway bid.

The Soaring Eagles sealed the win with a four-goal third period. Weston scored at 2:44, and Lamoureux netted a power-play goal at 5:03. Charbonneau scored at 6:53 to make it a 7-1 game, and Walker finished the scoring with an unassisted goal at 10:18. Shortly after, the Red Dragons successfully killed off a two-minute two-player advantage for Elmira.
