Oswego Ties Potsdam in Game One

The Oswego State women's ice hockey team jumped out to a 4-1 lead after two periods, but allowed four goals in the third period en route to a 5-5 tie against Potsdam on Saturday afternoon at Maxcy Hall.

Leading 5-3 with 4:26 remaining in regulation, Potsdam received goals from Izzy Fayerman and Jessica Silveira to force overtime. The Bears pulled goalie Jen Conophy with 58 seconds remaining in regulation and Silveira was able to take advantage of the extra attacker, as she beat Oswego State goalie Bridget Smith (Fr., Hamburg, N.Y.) with 38 seconds remaining to tie the game at five.

Potsdam took a one-goal lead at 10:41 of the first period on the Bears' first power play attempt of the game. Oswego State was called for a five-minute major for high sticking and Potsdam's Alexandra Holowka capitalized, beating Smith for the game's first goal. 

The Lakers responded by scoring the game's next four goals over the first two periods. Megan Howe (So., Stratford, Ont.) tied the game at one with an unassisted goal at 14:24 of the first period and Jocelyn St. Clair (So., Cambridge, Ont.) gave the Lakers the lead at 17:15 while playing 4-on-4 hockey. 

Kelly Collins (Sr., Fairport, N.Y.) gave the Lakers a two-goal lead on the power play at 9:21 of the second period. Following a hooking penalty, Collins received a pass from Mackenzie Lee (Sr., Caledonia, N.Y.) and beat Conophy for the team's only power-play goal of the game. Melissa Seamont(So., North Bay, Ont.) was also awarded an assist on the play. 

Potsdam transfer Emma Smetaniuk (So., Frankford, Ont.) got involved in the offense as well, registering Oswego State's fourth goal of the game.Leslie Jarvis (So., Newmarket, Ont.) was credited with the assist. 

Trailing by three goals heading into the third period, the Bears wasted no time getting back into the game, scoring two goals in the first 7:19 of the frame. Manahan scored at 4:13 and Fayerman scored her first of two goals in the third period at 7:19 to bring the Bears within one. 

The Lakers committed back-to-back penalties following Fayerman's first goal, but Kathyrn Sbrocchi (Sr., Mississauga, Ont.) tallied a shorthanded goal to push the Oswego State lead back to two at 15:34 of the third period. 

Potsdam answered quickly, cutting the deficit back to one just 35 seconds later and preceded to tie the game with 38 seconds remaining with the extra attacker. 

The Lakers recorded four shots on goal in the overtime period while the Bears recorded two shots on goal, but neither team was able to record the game-winning goal. 

Both teams recorded one power-play goal, as the Lakers finished 1-for-5 and the Bears finished 1-for-6 with the extra skater. 

Smith finished the game with 26 saves and Conophy finished with 29 saves. 

With the tie, Oswego State moves to 2-3-2 overall and 2-1-2 in ECAC West play. The Bears move to 1-4-1 overall and ECAC West play.
