NU Women Extend Unbeaten Streak with Win Over Colgate

The Niagara women’s hockey team (5-5-2, 0-0-0 CHA) extend its unbeaten streak to five games after defeating the Colgate Raiders (4-4-1, 1-1-1 ECAC), 2-1 at Dwyer Arena Friday afternoon.

The Purple Eagles are currently tied with Mercyhurst for the longest unbeaten streak in the nation (3-0-2).

"It's nice for us to hold onto the lead, especially late in the third period by staying out of the penalty box," said head coach Josh Sciba.  "We got outworked for 40 minutes of hockey, but Abby played well.  We did a lot of positive things.  Special teams was the difference again.  I think this win gives us some confidence.  Tomorrow I'd like to see the girls play more offensively though, instead of sitting back and waiting for things to happen."

Senior forward Erica Owczarczak netted the game winner for the Purple Eagles with 6:15 left in the first period on a powerplay goal.  A pass off the stick of Kaleigh Chippy in front of the net reached Owczarczak for the one timer.

Sophomore forward Jessica Hitchcock netted her seventh goal of the season at the 16:45 mark of the first period off a feed from Jenna Hendrikx to make it a 1-0 game.  Hitchcock circled around the net, escaping a Colgate defender, before tossing one behind goalie Kimberly Sass from the right circle.  Niagara outshot Colgate 13-2.

The last tally of the game came in the second stanza when freshman Miriam Drubel scored her fourth goal of the season on the man advantage with just 16 seconds left in the period.  A shot by Shannon Doyle rebounded off Niagara netminder Abby Ryplanski and trickled to Drubel's stick for the tap in.

Ryplanski made 21 saves between the pipes, to improve her record to 4-0-1 in her last five starts.
