US Women Take Sweden 8-0

The U.S. Women's National Team scored five goals in the second period en route to an 8-0 victory over Sweden in its first game of the 2011 Four Nations Cup. "It was a good start for us," said Katey Stone, head coach of the 2011 U.S. Women's National Team. "Our players kept it simple and moved the puck quickly. It's going to be that hardworking effort that makes a difference." After a scoreless first period, Monique Lamoureux-Kolls (Grand Forks, N.D.) got the U.S. on the board with an unassisted goal at 2:45 of the second. Then, Kelli Stack (Brooklyn Heights, Ohio) struck eight minutes later to extend Team USA's lead to 2-0. The U.S. scored three goals in just over three minutes when Caitlin Cahow (Branford, Conn.) connected for a power-play goal at 13:09, Kendall Coyne (Palos Heights, Ill.) found the back of the net at 15:00 andAmanda Kessel (Verona, Wis.) struck for a power-play tally of her own at 16:30 to give the Americans a five-goal lead through two periods of play. Stack and Lamoureux-Kolls potted their second goals of the game in the third frame, and Jocelyne Lamoureux (Grand Forks, N.D.) closed out the scoring with 21 seconds remaining. U.S. goalie Molly Schaus (Natick, Mass.) made eight saves in the shutout victory, while Sweden's Kim Martin stopped 63 shots in the loss. The U.S. Women's National Team will face Canada today (Nov. 10) at 9:30 a.m. EST in its second game of the Four Nations Cup.
